DEFIANCE SENIOR HI FAT
Defiance Senior Hi Fat is a highly-fortified textured high-fat (10%) horse feed with a low level of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC, 5.6 %). It is designed for mature horses sensitive to sugar or starch who need additional calories, particularly those that are thinning with age. Additionally, Defiance Senior Hi Fat contains loose beet pulp shreds to offer a bulky fiber source to those horses having difficulty consuming hay or forage. Due to the loose beet pulp, this feed has minimal soybean oil and molasses to improve the safety and palatability of the feed. This feed is available as a 5/32 inch pellet with shreds of beet pulp.
NON-STRUCTURAL CARBOHYDRATES (5.6 %)
Upon first introduction, Defiance Senior Hi Fat should be presented to the horse’s diet slowly. A good rule of thumb is to mix ½ of the new feed with ½ of the old feed for 3 to 5 days. After the transition, feed according to the following chart:
|Level of Activity||
Defiance Senior Hi Fat
|Maintenance (<3 hours of work/week)||Up to 5 lbs*|
(>3 hours of work/week)
|Seniors (as the sole diet)||1 - 1.5 lbs per 100 lbs of Body Weight|
*Note that the chart is based on the nutrient requirements of a 500 kg (1,100 lb) mature horse and is therefore a simple guideline. Adjust depending on the horse's body condition, age, and level of activity. If feeding less than the amount recommended, then additional vitamin and minerals should be offered to meet the horse’s total dietary nutrient requirements for vitamins and minerals. As a rule of thumb, for every 1 lb of Defiance Senior Hi Fat omitted, add ¼ lb of Vital Edge Pelleted Mineral or 1 oz of Ranch-O-Min 1011 Horse Mineral, daily.
Feed along with a minimum of 1.0% of the horse’s body weight daily in the form of forage (hay or pasture) to maintain proper gut health. This product may be fed as the sole ration to senior horses, however it is advised to continue to offer good-quality “leafy” hay to senior horses that can still consume it. Do not exceed 8 lbs of this feed per meal. This feed may need to be moistened or soaked with water for safe consumption, especially for aggressive eaters, horses with no prior experience consuming loose beet pulp, or for senior horses that have no teeth. Fresh, clean water and white salt should be available free-choice.
DO NOT FEED TO SHEEP DUE TO ADDED COPPER.
